Module 1: Manual Handling Awareness
- Identify common manual handling injuries
Recognise typical injuries associated with poor manual handling, such as back strains and musculoskeletal disorders, and understand their impact on individuals and businesses.
- Laws, legal duties and responsibilities
Gain an overview of key Health & Safety and manual handling regulations, including employer and employee responsibilities in controlling manual handling risks.
- Employer and employee obligations
Understand how employers must manage manual handling risks and how employees are expected to follow safe systems of work and use equipment correctly.
Module 2: Risk Assessment
- Carrying out manual handling risk assessments
Learn a simple step-by-step approach to assessing manual handling tasks, considering the load, the task, the individual and the environment.
- Identifying hazards and reducing risks
Identify common manual handling hazards and explore practical ways to reduce risk, such as redesigning tasks, adjusting loads or changing the work environment.
- Applying HSE compliant safe systems of work
Understand how to apply HSE-compliant safe systems of work so that manual handling tasks are planned, supervised and carried out safely.
Module 3: Safe Handling Principles
- Musculoskeletal system and injury prevention
Build a basic understanding of the musculoskeletal system and how good posture and movement techniques help prevent injury.
- Balance, centre of gravity and lever systems
Learn how balance, centre of gravity and lever principles affect manual handling, and how to use them to move loads more safely and efficiently.

Obtaining your certificate
On successful completion of the multiple-choice exam and practical assessment, delegates receive a QA Level 2 Safe Moving and Handling (RQF) certificate, regulated and nationally recognised, valid for 3 years.

Assessment is through a multiple-choice exam and practical assessment of safe moving and handling techniques.
