Course syllabus
Module 1: Emergency Response
- First aider roles and responsibilities
Clarifies the legal duties and responsibilities of a workplace first aider, including acting safely and within the scope of training.
- Assessing incidents safely
Shows how to approach and assess an incident scene, identify hazards and protect yourself and others before giving first aid.
- Calling for help and managing the scene
Explains when and how to call emergency services, what information to provide and how to manage the scene while waiting for help.
- Primary and secondary survey (DR ABC)
Covers structured checks of airway, breathing and circulation, plus secondary assessment to identify further injuries or illness.
- Recording and reporting incidents
Shows how to record and report workplace incidents correctly in line with company procedures and legal requirements.
Module 2: CPR & AED
- Adult CPR
Practise high-quality adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation in line with current Resuscitation Council guidelines.
- Using an AED
Gain hands-on experience using an Automated External Defibrillator to support a casualty in cardiac arrest.
- Managing resuscitation difficulties
Learn how to deal with common challenges during CPR and make safe decisions under pressure.
Module 3: Recovery Position
- Placing a casualty in the recovery position
Practise placing an unresponsive but breathing casualty into the recovery position safely and effectively.
- Ongoing monitoring
Understand how to monitor breathing and responsiveness and when to change position or escalate for further help.
- Scenario-based practice
Apply recovery-position skills in realistic scenarios to build confidence in real-world situations.
Module 4: Wound Care & Bleeding
- Managing life-threatening bleeding
Learn techniques to control severe external bleeding and reduce the risk of shock.
- Bandaging and dressings
Develop practical skills in applying a range of bandages and dressings to support and protect injuries.
- Burns, scalds and minor injuries
Covers treatment of burns, scalds, splinters, bruises and minor wounds using appropriate first aid methods.
- Scenario-based wound care
Use realistic scenarios to practise assessing and treating a variety of wounds and bleeding emergencies.
Module 5: Medical Emergencies
- Circulatory and neurological emergencies
Recognise and respond to heart attacks, strokes, shock, fainting and seizures in the workplace.
- Breathing and allergy-related conditions
Covers asthma attacks, anaphylaxis and other breathing difficulties, including when to use medication and when to call 999.
- Illnesses such as diabetes, meningitis and sepsis
Helps you spot key warning signs and provide appropriate first aid support while waiting for advanced care.
- Responding to complex medical conditions
Brings together learning to handle more complex or combined medical emergencies confidently.
Module 6: Airway & Breathing Problems, Burns & Scalds
- Airway and breathing emergencies
Explores choking, drowning and other airway or breathing problems and how to respond effectively.
- Respiratory system issues
Builds understanding of how breathing problems develop and how first aid can support a casualty while awaiting advanced help.
- Practical choking drills
Use manikins and choking vests to practise back blows, abdominal thrusts and other techniques safely.
- Chemical and electrical burns
Shows how to recognise different types of burns, assess severity and provide the correct first aid treatment.
Obtaining your certificate
On successful completion of the three-day course and assessments, delegates receive a nationally recognised Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for 3 years and accepted across the UK as evidence of full workplace first aider training.
Assessment
Assessment is through practical observation of first aid skills and written multiple-choice questions (MCQs).
